In 1985, Ott sold Dorney Park to Harris Weinstein. Robert Ott, Plarr's son-in-law, took over as owner in 1967. Ownership then passed to Plarr's son, Stephen, who died within a year. She lived there until the late 1980s, never granting him the divorce. Plarr built a house for his estranged wife Wiltracy Plarr in the 1930s under the first hill of Thunder Hawk in hopes of driving her to divorce. Plarr soon bought out his partners and ran Dorney Park until his death in 1966. That year, the park was sold to Robert Plarr and two other partners. Two years later, the traction company purchased the park, operating it until 1923. When the Allentown-Kutztown Traction Company completed its trolley line from Allentown to Kutztown in 1899, the company added a stop at Dorney's park. By the 1880s, Dorney had added a small zoo, and gardens. Start by going around the house, but refrain from doing much outside activity. Tummy tuck recovery: week 3Īt this point we begin the recovery phase. Finally, pain pills can make you very constipated, and straining at stool can harm the muscle repair. And second, sometimes patients feel too good with pain medications and tend to do too much. First, pain can be a feedback mechanism for your body to tell you if you are doing too much. So be sure to use cool (not cold) water.Īs far as pain medications, I usually recommend at this time to start tapering the dose. If they get relaxed enough, blood can flow away from your veins to your lower body and you may faint. Don’t take a warm shower at first because when you remove the garment, the blood vessels relax, and the warm water makes them relax even more. When you go into the shower, use cool water. Do not try to stand up straight yet, as this will pull on the wound.ĭuring this second week post op, you may still need help getting the compression garment on and off, so it is a good idea to have family and friends nearby. That is why we recommend that you keep wearing the compression garment at all times (24/7) during the second week.Īt this point, it is also still important to keep the skin layer relaxed, so keep the head of the bed elevated and your knees bent while resting in bed. The purpose is to get your muscles moving again, expand your lungs more, and prevent blood clots in the calves.īut remember, don’t over do it because you could still cause the muscle layer to slide against the skin layer and separate, causing a hematoma or seroma. I recommend getting up and walking around the room at least 3 times a day. But now I want the patient to start moving around. Tummy tuck recovery: week 2Īfter the sixth day following your surgery, the muscle layer is beginning to knit against the skin layer, but things are not quite set. However, the new garment should be put back on immediately to prevent swelling and fluid accumulations. We then determine the plan of action for your follow during the next week of post op.Īfter this post op office visit, you can shower or bathe. During this initial post op visit the compression garment is also removed and you’re given a new, clean garment. With all of the tubes and drains removed, you are feeling more mobile. Most patients have their drains and the pain pump removed at this time. On the 5 th day post op, I usually see my Tummy tuck patients in my office. Fluids should not be diet sodas, but rather fluids such as juices or gatorade. You can resume a normal diet as tolerated, but be sure to drink LOTS of fluids, especially in the first 72 hours following surgery. Drains can help prevent this, but if you move too much fluid will accumulate despite the drains. This results in either fluid collections (seroma) or blood collection (hematoma). Too much motion can cause the skin layer to slide against the muscle layer so the two tissues cannot knit together. Walking should be goal-driven only–such as to the bathroom or to the refrigerator. With the relaxed skin you have less tension on the wound, so less wound problems and better blood supply for healing.ĭuring these first five days you should not be walking around. This position also relaxes the skin on your belly, which was stretched at the time of closure. This is important because keeping your torso elevated helps expand your lungs, decreasing the likelihood of lung problems. Here are more details about what to do in the first five days following your surgery: Bed rest and dietįollowing Abdominoplasty surgery, you should be in bed with the head of the bed elevated and multiple pillows under your (slightly bent) knees. The first few days after surgery should be quiet time. Tummy tuck recovery: week 1 (first 5 days) We hope you find it helpful as you contemplate whether a Tummy tuck might be right for you. Here is how we advise our own abdominoplasty post op patients who have undergone surgery in our Baltimore surgery center. ![]() Like most things in life, the best answer is found somewhere in the middle. Nowadays patients are encouraged to get moving soon, but that can also have its own set of problems such as wound separations, infections, or fluid collections. In the past, patients were told to stay very still for a long time following Abdominoplasty, but that created its own set of problems such as blood clots in the legs, or problems with the lungs. So what is the recovery time for Tummy tuck? Recovery from a Tummy tuck has to balance two things: the need to get your body going as quickly as possible, versus the need to keep things quiet until your body has had a chance to heal well. ![]() ![]() ![]() This proved too ambitious a goal, so she enlisted musicians she’d met on the festival circuit, sending them a high-quality, twenty-minute whalesong recording that she’d analyzed for her master’s thesis. “The more I learned about animal behavior, the more I got interested in marine mammals, because there is social learning, vocal communication, and culture.” She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in marine biology at the University of Zagreb, and went on to work with groups that study whales and dolphins in Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere eventually she returned to Split to work at the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences, as part of a team called ARTScience, finding ways to creatively communicate the institute’s research.Īt first, Niksic planned to produce the entire album herself. “I was always curious about the ocean and all the creatures living down there,” she told me. She could see the water from her window, and learned to swim before she could walk. Niksic was born in Split, Croatia, on the country’s coast, across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. “So I thought this concept of remixes in our music would be perfect to communicate this research about the evolution of whalesong.” “Basically, whales remix each other’s songs,” she said. The new album, she told me, connects to her own research, which focusses on how whale songs shift from year to year. Listening, you wonder about the minds behind them.Įarlier this year, Niksic released “ Canticum Megapterae II - The Evolution,” a remix album on which a new group of electronic musicians interprets the track she made for the first volume. Integrated into the tracks, the vocalizations sound at times soothing or playful, and occasionally experimental-sound for sound’s sake. Niksic’s record evokes nineteen-nineties classics such as “The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld” its synthesized clicks, sweeps, and throbs would sound good in the chill-out room at a rave. In 2019, she self-released an album of electronic music titled “ Canticum Megapterae - Song of the Humpback Whale.” (Humpback whales belong to the genus Megaptera.) The album contains a track she produced, alongside songs by seven other artists, and combines psychedelic trance and ambient tones-the building blocks of a genre called psybient-with whalesong. Sara Niksic, a biologist and musician from Croatia, is a recent participant in the genre. Artists, including Kate Bush, Judy Collins, and the cast of “The Partridge Family,” integrated whalesong into their work in 1970, the composer Alan Hovhaness combined whale and orchestra for a piece called “And God Created Great Whales.” In 2014, a group of ambient composers and artists released a compilation album called “ POD TUNE.” Whales’ otherworldly emissions are now literally otherworldly: in 1977, NASA included whalesong recordings on records it attached to its Voyager spacecraft. The previous year, Payne had published an album of whale recordings called “Songs of the Humpback Whale” it sold more than a hundred thousand copies, and became a soundtrack for the conservation movement. They chose the term advisedly, drawing, they said, on a 1963 book titled “Acoustic Behavior of Animals,” which identified a song as “a series of notes, generally of more than one type, uttered in succession and so related as to form a recognizable sequence or pattern in time.” And there was an intuitive sense in which the whales’ vocalizations sounded songlike. They analyzed the recordings, and Payne’s own, and found structure and repetition in the sounds, documenting a sonic hierarchy: units, phrases, and themes, which combined into what they called song. Payne and Scott McVay, published a paper titled “Songs of Humpback Whales.” They began by noting how “during the quiet age of sail, under conditions of exceptional calm and proximity, whalers were occasionally able to hear the sounds of whales transmitted faintly through a wooden hull.” In the modern era, we could listen in new ways: Payne and McVay worked with underwater recordings of humpback-whale vocalizations from a naval researcher who, as the story goes, was listening for Soviet submarines off Bermuda. It's possible Shaw will meet his end after another similarly narrow-minded decision and Seven will step up to the Titan's captain's chair. It's not him - and her name isn't Annika. However, there's one person around that table destined to command a Starfleet ship in Picard Season 3 and presumably beyond. Shaw sees Seven and Picard as flawed and untrustworthy because of their Borg connection, though the wine may have accentuated that bias. If anyone has justification for hating the Borg as much as Starfleet does, it's Seven of Nine. They are people who didn't choose to be assimilated - and upon release the Borg part of their identity is not something they should be forced to give up. However, the ex-Borg like Seven of Nine and Picard have a different story. Agnes Jurati merged with Annie Wersching's Borg Queen at the end of Season 2 for a constructive purpose. He's one of those people in charge who can't handle it when his subordinate is better than he is. Yet Shaw also knows that if it had been him face-to-face with the Borg Queen, he wouldn't have gotten a special name. This dictionary tells us that the word lame also applies especially to being disabled in the foot or leg, so as to walk haltingly or be unable to walk. He finds Picard's entire style to be a flagrant disregard of Starfleet values. The Oxford English Dictionary tells us that lame means to be disabled or impaired in any way weak, infirm paralyzed unable to move. Shaw doesn't just look down on Picard because he once went by Locutus. It's possible that rather than prejudicial hatred, Shaw just suffers from the mere human flaw of jealousy. For Seven of Nine, her Borg past is what makes her worthy of her individuality. HUMAN meaning: 1 : of, relating to, or affecting people 2 : typical of people. So season 3's allegory is very clear, though any number of identities could be substituted for Borg. Season 2 also saw the birth of a new kind of Borg Collective - one that only assimilates willing creatures, with Picard implying their individuality isn't erased. dated, now usually offensive see usage paragraph below : unable or only partially able to use a body part and especially a limb.
