The XMP Label (a string) can either be synchronized or not synchronized with the color class value (for Photo Mechanic this is a number from 0-8).This is consistent with Adobe’s handling of conflicting IPTC/XMP metadata. For RAW files with both embedded XMP and an XMP sidecar file, the most recently modified XMP will be loaded. XMP is preferred over IPTC, but any IPTC fields missing in XMP are now included. XMP metadata is now handled automatically. Navigator and Favorites are now threaded so Photo Mechanic doesn’t have to wait for slow external drives or network volumes to load.Session Save and Restore: Photo Mechanic can optionally restore all Contact Sheet tabs and all of their settings that were in place when you last quit.Fullscreen support on macOS and Windows for both the Contact Sheet and Preview windows (including both at the same time on different monitors).Reverse Geocoding: using GPS coordinates embedded in your photos, insert place information metadata (city, state, country, etc.) into your images.Ingest from Selection: all the power of Ingest but from a selection of images on a card or disk.Internal image caching improvements increases thumbnail / preview generation speed by approximately 2-3x (depending on various factors including source media).NOTE: Apple has said 64-bit will be a requirement for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) although their current public betas of 10.14 do not force this but instead give a one-time warning. To summarize: Versions are major releases of the software, you upgrade to go from one to the next. This is when you stay within the same version, but install a newer build, as above. ![]() You can also customize when Photo Mechanic checks for these. When you run into what might be a bug, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’re on the latest “build” of your version, which you can do by going to Help > Software Update. Sometimes they will include new functionality that would not merit a full version on its own. These are relatively common updates to fix small bugs, or to tweak features that were not working as expected. ![]() Sometimes called “update” or “service release” or just “release.” There is usually a cost involved in purchasing a new version, but there are discounts for users with valid licenses of the previous versions, and often there’s a grace period for people who bought one version recently and need to upgrade to a new version. To “upgrade” means to go from one version of Photo Mechanic to a new version, like Photo Mechanic version 5 to Photo Mechanic 6. ![]() That’s why Photo Mechanic 6 is a completely different version and an upgrade from Photo Mechanic version 5. In the case of Photo Mechanic 6, for example, the program was completely re-engineered to take advantage of modern operating systems’ 64-bit performance. When a new version of Photo Mechanic is released, it is always the result of a major development effort. When the number after “Photo Mechanic” changes, that is a new version.
